Carnivore Diet

Meat and Fruit Diet: Fad or Revolutionary New Diet?

The meat and fruit diet has taken life since notorious podcaster Joe Rogan committed to only eating meat and fruit for a complete month last January. But this isn't anything new or surprising. In fact, Rogan has been known to go on a carnivore diet come January each year.

On that same note, high-protein diets have taken mainstream by storm.

Especially those comprised of meat, and simply just meat, which is also known as the Carnivore Diet. While this meat-only diet sounds restrictive and not the healthiest of diet plans, it can garner some positive benefits like weight loss, mental clarity, and increased energy.

Cutting into Cooked Meat

What is a meat and fruit diet?

A meat and fruit diet is essentially a Carnivore Diet that incorporates small quantities of fruit. Traditionally a carnivore diet consists specifically of "foods that either walked, swam, or flew," says Kelly Schmidt, RD, a holistic dietitian. (1) In other words, it's a high-protein (specifically consuming only lean animal proteins), zero-carb diet.

What can you eat on a fruit and meat diet?

This type of high protein diet limits food intake to meat, fish, and other animal foods. And if you're following Rogan's structure, you can also incorporate some fruits.

  • Meat: beef, lamb, pork, game, chicken, turkey, etc.
  • Fish: salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, crab, etc.
  • Animal Products: eggs, bone marrow, lard, bone broth, etc.
  • Low-lactose dairy products (in small amounts): butter, heavy cream, hard cheese, etc.
  • Seasonings (with no carbs): salt, black pepper, etc.
  • Some fruits
  • Water

What are the benefits of eating a meat and fruit diet?

Even though there hasn't been much clinical research looking specifically into how the Carnivore Diet affects our health, there are some anecdotal evidence from carnivore dieters that show how powerful it can be.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Weight Loss
  • Increased Mental Clarity
  • Simplified Dieting
  • Improved Gut Health
  • Reduced Inflammation
  • Improved Heart Health

Bottom Line: Is it healthy to only eat meat and fruit?

The meat and fruit diet isn't necessarily the healthiest or substantial diet meal plan because of its restrictive nature, however, it can be useful for short term weight loss and those looking to kickstart a Keto or Carnivore Diet.
