7+ High-Protein Hiking Snacks to Keep You Fueled

We're spoiled here in Los Angeles. Not just because of the fantastic food, the incredible cultural diversity, or the beautiful beaches spanning down the coast, I'm talking about the weather!

In Southern California, it's always hiking weather, which is great...right? Yes, usually it is. It's definitely not if you wake up in the mood to kick back, order Thai food delivery, and binge the newest true crime doc on Netflix. These are the days we shake our fist at the sky, reckoning with whoever is controlling the rain, "aren't we in a drought or something!?" Thankfully they don't care, it doesn't rain, and we end up hiking. You can find us almost any weekend at one of our favorite hiking trails with the best healthy hiking snacks!

It doesn't take much convincing to get us off the couch and into hiking boots, though. Honestly, it's even easier to get us going if you let us know what we're eating. Hiking food (even backpacking food) no longer needs to lack depth, flavor, or fun. These days there are plenty of hiking snacks that are lightweight, portable, packed with protein, and exceptionally delicious! Ones that will keep your blood sugar level and steady.

Have you ever gone on a hike where someone brought pouched tuna? What about perishable snacks?

Yeah, people do that. We're here to make sure you're not that person. And that if that person is in your hiking group, you can be the hero by simply whipping out a variety of tasty, healthy, and high-protein trail-ready treats! Now, onto the list!

1. Shār Trail Mix

Shar Trail Mail

Trail mix is the Godfather of hiking snacks and overall just a great snack. The combo of nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate dates back to at least 1910, when outdoorsman Horace Kephart recommended it in his popular camping guide. The combo provides the perfect amount of calories, fat, carbs, and protein to keep you fueled on the trail. Plus, good trail mix is just as addicting–if not more addicting–than munching on a bag of potato chips! And it's a quick energy boost that will last a long time.

Shār Snacks Trail Mix is our go-to for a few reasons. One major perk of supporting Shar is that they donate 20% of their net profits to the mighty Conservation Alliance. The packaging is easy to transport, completely plastic-free, and the lid can double as a miniature serving bowl on your rest breaks. Lastly, the mix is made with nine incredible ingredients that are 100% organic, small-batch, and responsibly sourced.

2. People's Choice Beef Jerky

People's Choice Beef Jerky

If trail mix is The Godfather of hiking snacks, then beef jerky (or any dehydrated meats) is The Godfather 2. Beef jerky is the ultimate shelf-stable, high protein food. And while we may not be expert hikers–though we get by just fine–we are experts at our craft. We've been hand-making small batches of beef jerky in the heart of downtown Los Angeles for over 90 years. We're confident that our jerky is the best trail companion.

We offer a variety of beef jerky flavors, ranging from our traditional Old Fashioned Collection to our modern Tasting Kitchen Collection. Plus, we have jerky options fit for nearly every dietary preference! Check out our Keto Collection if you're on that low-carb grind! Otherwise, our favorite jerky for the trail has got to be our Cowboy Peppered Beef Jerky!

3. RX Layers Bars

RX Layers Bar

It's no secret that protein bars, granola bars, and energy bars have been a great go-to snack for hiking, backpacking, camping, climbing and really any outdoor activities. Unfortunately, not all bars are created equally! In fact, some of the most popular bars aren't all that healthy as they're filled with unnecessary added sugars and preservatives.

RX Layers Bars are portable, protein-packed, and made with no B.S. The ingredients are so simple they list them out on the front of the bar. No matter which flavor you choose, you'll be in for a balanced bar filled with re-energizing protein, carbs, and fats.

4. Imlak'esh Nut Clusters

Clusters

These cool little Clusters are the ultimate raw power snack. They're entirely organic and made of just cashews, cacao nibs, coconut nectar, and maca powder. The cacao and maca work together to increase and sustain energy for longer treks. Cacao nibs contain minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants to help uplift you, while the maca powder has adaptogenic properties to balance hormones and increase stamina.

They're ultra-lightweight and portable, making them perfect for snacking before, during, or after a long hike!

5. AMG Snacks Energy Bites

AMG Snack Energy Bites are essentially a high-quality protein bar in ball form for an ultra-fun refueling experience. They offer a variety of flavors ranging from almond chai to cherry pistachio. All contain a minimal blend of all-natural ingredients and come packed with healthy fats, fiber, and protein, making them a perfect healthy on-the-go snack!

6. People's Choice Beef Sticks

If you're looking for beef sticks that fit into your low-carb diet, we recommend you check out our Sea Salt & Pepper Mini Beef Sticks.

7. 4505 Chicharrones

4505 Chicharrones

Although a little unconventional for the trails, we thought we'd recommend 4505 Chicharrones based on their portability and protein content. They’re one of the best high protein low carb snacks and can take the place of those carb-heavy potato chips you initially lunged for in the cabinet!

8. People's Choice Beef Jerky Naked Jerky Crisps

Naked Jerky Crisps

If you're looking for a snack that's compact but packs a heavy protein punch you'll want to try these Naked Jerky Crisps that contain no artificial ingredients. They're super clean and made with only three simple ingredients: beef, water and salt. When you bite into these chips, they have a satisfying crunch. Plus, they have 40g of protein per 1.8oz bag and a long shelf life. The nutrition label is one that is hard to beat and perfect for all your adventures. Throw it in your pack and take it to go!

The Bottom Line

All of the above snacks make great options to take on the trails. The key to finding the perfect hiking snack is looking for portable, healthy, and well-balanced snacks that are easy to grab and go. The balance of protein, carbs, and fats will help increase and sustain energy for those long hikes.

Grab some high protein jerky for your next hike.
