Beer & Jerky Parings

I believe it would be difficult to find a more natural pairing combination than an ice cold beer and the salty and versatile snack known as beef jerky. Luckily enough, People’s Choice Beef Jerky have provided me with an opportunity to do some pairing reviews. With their rich family history of producing a wide range of small batch beef jerky since 1929, I knew I would have lots of opportunities to pair just the right beer with just the right jerky!

Sweet Chili Habanero- Tasting Kitchen Collection

 Tasting Notes:

The name represents this jerky perfectly. Lots of sweetness in the beginning and a big kick of heat coming in about mid-way through, lasting well into the after taste.

 Pairing Suggestions:

IPA or Wheat Bier

 My Pairing Choice:

Bellwoods Brewery

Milkshark Lime

Milkshake IPA w/ Vanilla & Lime

ABV: 7.0% IBU: ?

 Tasting Notes:

Big lactose and vanilla flavors come through right from the beginning and provide a creamy and buttery mouthfeel. Lime flavorings develop in the mid-sip and eventually leads into a tart aspect on the finish.

 Pairing Notes:

The contrasting aspects of these two balance one another out. The tart lime taste meshes well with the sweetness of the jerky, while the heat of the habanero is curbed by the vanilla lactose portion of the beer. I choose a milkshake IPA solely to curb some of the heat and this weird combination actually worked out quite well. This jerky provided that extra boost of energy to get me through another phase of my kitchen Reno.
