Old Fashioned Original and Beer Pairing

Beer & Jerky Pairings

I believe it would be difficult to find a more natural pairing combination than an ice cold beer and the salty and versatile snack known as beef jerky. Luckily enough, People’s Choice Beef Jerky, have provided me with an opportunity to do some pairing reviews. With their rich family history of producing a wide range of small batch beef jerky since 1929, I knew I would have lots of opportunities to pair just the right beer with just the right jerky.

Old Fashioned Original Beef Jerky

Tasting Notes: This one provides that traditional salt and pepper steak flavor with a drier and chewier texture.

Pairing Suggestions: Lager or Pilsner

My Pairing Choice: Waterloo Brewing, Craft Lager

ABV: 4.8% IBU: 17

Tasting Notes: This one begins with pale grainy malts, providing a doughy sweetness. Picking up a light lemon taste in the mid-sip, before it transitions into a muted, grassy and floral hops aspect on the finish. Carbonation level helps provide a crisp mouthfeel that cleanses the palate after each sip.

Pairing Notes: This match up goes hand in hand, as the jerky provides the salty nutrition and makes you thirsty, while the lager quenches your thirst. A battle that goes back and forth, until you’re out of beer and jerky. I figured it only made sense to pair this original PCBJ with a beer from the first Ontario Craft Brewery.
