Habanero peppers are among the hottest chili peppers in the world. Clocking in between 100,000 – 350,000 Scoville units, the Habanero packs a pretty mean punch. To give you some context, the jalapeño pepper averages between 2,500 – 8,000 units, putting the Habanero at 12 to 140 times hotter.
Habaneros are a variety of Capsicum chinense, a species of peppers known for producing some of the hottest peppers on the planet.
Unripe Habaneros are green during the early stages of development and eventually take on red and orange hues as they mature. The most common color of the Habanero is a burnt orange, but other colors such as red, orange, white, brown, yellow, and pink have been found. At its fully mature stage, the Habanero reaches about 2.5 inches in length.
The Habanero pepper has a long and rich history. A domesticated Habanero pepper dated at 8,500 years old, was discovered in an archaeological dig in Peru. Etymologically, the Habanero translates to “from Havana.” The largest producer of the Habanero pepper is Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where the pepper is an integral part of local cuisine. While Mexico is the world’s largest consumer of the picante ingredient, the Habanero has become increasingly popular across the world.
In addition to the high level of spicy heat, the Habanero has a rich and complex flavor profile that shines in a variety of food applications. The Habanero pepper is known for its fruity, citrusy, and floral aromatic characteristics.
Our fascination and love for the Habanero pepper in all of its spicy glory led us to develop the Sweet Chili Habanero.
Introducing the newest flavor from the PCBJ Tasting Kitchen: Sweet Chili Habanero.
The Sweet Chili Habanero is a sweet and spicy blend that highlights the citrusy, fruity components of the Habanero pepper and doesn’t shy away from the heat. The addition of pineapple juice complements the fruity aromas of the Habanero and helps texturize the meat for a slightly softer chew. As always, our ultimate goal is to celebrate the natural meat flavors with complementary flavor pairings.
The first flavor to hit the palate is a bright fruit sweetness, almost tropical, that slowly accompanies the savory spice blend and the natural meat flavor of the 100% Angus beef. From there, the habanero heat slowly builds until it leaves you with an nice lingering burn, nothing overwhelming, but definitely present.
While we could have gone hotter with the Sweet Chili Habanero, we want to create balance between the sweet and spicy to create a snacking experience that will keep you coming back for more.
